Dr. Hoopes is a Utah native and Wake Forest University School of Medicine graduate in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed his eye surgery training at the University of Iowa Eye Center. Following his residency, Dr. Hoopes did his fellowship training in cataract, implant, and laser surgery in Savannah, Georgia. He has been a Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary member at Harvard University, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Kansas University Medical Center, and a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Moran Eye Center.
In 1984, he established The Eye Center of Kansas City in Overland Park, Kansas. His practice grew rapidly and was considered one of the largest eye care practices in the Midwest. His Kansas City office was one of a dozen centers involved in the original FDA studies and testing of laser eye surgery (PRK/LASIK) starting in 1989. After FDA approval, Dr. Hoopes performed the first FDA-approved Summit Technology Laser PRK procedure for myopia and astigmatism on March 16, 1998. Dr. Hoopes relocated back home to Utah in May 2000 and has performed over 110,000 successful LASIK and refractive surgeries and over 42,000 cataract and other vision correction procedures. Dr. Hoopes and his wife, Marilyn, are the parents of eight children and 31 grandchildren.
